How to Download Instagram Reels With Audio
Why the sound sometimes disappears, and how to save a reel properly the first time.
Why Reels Sometimes Lose Their Audio
Instagram stores a reel's video and its audio as separate streams. The visual track and the sound — especially when the sound is a licensed track from Instagram's music library — are delivered independently and combined by the app at playback time.
Screen recording captures whatever your device is playing, so it usually keeps sound. But saving through tools that grab only the video stream produces a silent file. That is the single most common reason a downloaded reel plays without audio.
A proper downloader has to fetch both streams and mux them back together into one file. That is what vGram does automatically.
Step-by-Step: Saving a Reel
- Open the reel in the Instagram app or on the web.
- Tap the share icon (the paper plane) and choose Copy link. On desktop, use the three-dot menu and select Copy link.
- Open vGram and paste the link into the input box. You can also use the Paste button to pull it straight from your clipboard.
- Choose your quality. Leave the format on video and pick a resolution — 1080p is a good default for reels.
- Press Download. The file arrives with audio and video already combined.
Only public reels work. If the account is private, no download tool can reach the content without credentials — and you should never give your Instagram password to a third-party site. Check the reel is visible in a logged-out browser window first.
Choosing the Right Quality
vGram offers resolutions from 144p to 4K, but the ceiling is set by the original upload. Instagram re-encodes uploads, and most reels top out around 1080p. Selecting 4K on a 1080p source does not add detail — you simply get the best available stream.
- 1080p — the practical best for most reels. Use this unless you have a reason not to.
- 720p — noticeably smaller files, fine for phone viewing.
- 480p and below — useful only when you are tight on data or storage.
Saving Just the Sound
If you only want the audio — a trending sound, a voiceover, a music bed — tick Audio Only before downloading and choose a format. MP3 is the most compatible; WAV is uncompressed and much larger. There is more detail in our audio extraction guide.
Where Files Land on Each Device
- Android — the Downloads folder; most gallery apps pick up videos automatically.
- iPhone and iPad — the Files app under Downloads. Open the file and use the share sheet to save it into Photos.
- Windows and macOS — your browser's usual download location.
Common Problems
"This URL is not supported"
Check you copied a link to a reel or post rather than a profile URL. vGram accepts Instagram and TikTok links only.
The download fails partway
Usually a network interruption. Retry — vGram automatically falls back to a secondary server if the primary one is busy.
The video is there but silent
This is the split-stream problem described above. Re-download through vGram, which combines the streams before handing you the file.
Before You Save Someone Else's Reel
Reels belong to the people who make them. Downloading your own work is straightforward. Downloading someone else's is fine for private, personal reference in most jurisdictions — but re-uploading it, running ads against it, or presenting it as your own is not.
